Tarot Card Meanings - The Emperor

by Steven Wagenheim

In our continuing series on the Major Arcana, we've come up to the fifth card of the Major Arcana, designated as card number four, The Emperor. This card always reminded me of seeing Emperor Ming sitting on his throne from the Flash Gordon movie serials. In this article, I'm going to explain the meaning of The Emperor when it appears in your spread.

The card, as it appears, the emperor seated on this throne, really does represent what the card stands for, which is authority. However, the card goes way beyond just that of authority. It also stands for a balance of power. To be a really excellent emperor you have to know how to use your power so that you don't end up abusing it. And the card goes even beyond that.

The Emperor is a card that represents experience and knowledge. The person represented by this card knows how to use his mind over matter, meaning that he is able to overcome any adversity. This person relies on his own intellect. He's not easily influenced or persuaded by others. When he makes up his mind to do something, it is almost impossible for anybody to change it.

The Emperor also represents somebody who is well respected. In order to hold a position of authority it is important that you have the respect of those under you. Otherwise, problems arise. Since this person has many abilities, he is usually able to get through any situation that arises.

Of course The Emperor is not without his downside. In reverse position, this card indicates a person or situation where there is a lack of control and where self-discipline is needed. Many times, what this card indicates is that the person it is referring to is cracking under the weight of all his responsibilities. In other cases, it indicates a third party who is becoming as burden to the subject.

In still other readings, this card in reversed position could indicate that somebody is after something that the subject has. In these cases, it is important to understand the motives of this person. It is important to avoid people who are not self sufficient and looking for you to give them a free ride. Otherwise, if the subject lets himself get sucked in, it could lead to taking on great responsibilities that he is not yet ready for.

The good of The Emperor far outweighs the negative vibrations and energies of this card. Even in reverse position, these are things that can be dealt with, which is why The Emperor is one of the strongest cards of the Major Arcana.

To YOUR Divination Success,

Steven Wagenheim
