How to Reach to a State Beyond the Reason - And Why? by Bhaskar Banerjee
Anything that can be known beyond the human capacity further than our own eyes can see or mind can reach, is from a state of no-mind. It may be difficult to digest the idea, but it is so. And the theory of reincarnation is based on the eternality of the soul, which, Tony rightly doubts to be "the real difficult one to prove, because how does anyone know this, is it rather an intuition, a best guess?"
In order to prove the eternality, immortality, immutability and luminosity of the soul - and experience is the only proof we have as the first teacher - one will have to go beyond mind - that is, the knowledge of the senses. The agnostics say that they cannot know God, and rightly so, for they have exhausted the limits of their senses and yet get no further knowledge of God. Therefore the knowledge of the soul, your centre, your God, your religion, is not, and never can be, in the field of intellect. Intellectual reasoning is based on facts evident to the senses, and religion has nothing to do with the senses. Sir William Hamilton has said at the end of a philosophical work, "Here philosophy ends, here religion begins".
But the contrary is also true. Like I said yesterday that the idea seems perfectly logical, but it is not existential. How do you perceive if you remove the mind? Perception is our only real knowledge or religion. Talking about it (religion) for ages will never make us realize the soul. Thus there is no difference between theories and atheism. In fact, the atheist is the truer man. We have to see for ourselves; teachers can only "bring the food", we must eat it to be nourished. Argument can never prove God save as a logical conclusion. It is impossible to find God outside of ourselves.
You may be surprised to know that the word "repent" is in Greek "metanoeite," (meta is beyond, and noeite is knowledge) - the knowledge of the (five) senses. That is the meaning of "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Why have all religions advocated dropping the mind? The answer is that we are undeniably the manifestation of matter and spirit, and we know from science that mind and matter are interchangeable: the mind is subtle matter; and matter (body) is gross mind. So, matter will have to be removed to experience the essence of the spirit in our utterly pure consciousness.
Now the processes: In order to remove the mind, the mind itself has to be used as a means. Concentration of the powers of the mind is our only instrument to help us see the eternal, or God, if you so prefer. If you know one soul (your own), you know all souls, past, present, and to come. The will-power concentrates the mind. Certain things excite and control this will, such as reason, love, devotion and breathing. The concentrated mind is a lamp that shows us every nook and corner of the soul.
Stick to your reason until you reach something higher; and you will know it to be higher, because it will not jar with reason. All religion is going beyond reason, but reason is the only guide to get there. Instinct is like the ice, reason is the water, and inspiration is the subtlest form or vapour; one follows the other. Everywhere it is the eternal sequence - unconsciousness, consciousness, intelligence. Mind is unconscious, and therefore delusional; Intelligence is luminous, the dispeller of delusion. This is the journey of a seeker. All questions arise in ignorance. When there are no more questions, it is Samadhi, "the solution".
Religion is above reason; it is supernatural, without the meddling intellect; doubts disappearing, and where faith descends of its own, unconditionally. There is nothing to be done. Faith is not belief; it is the grasp on the Ultimate, an illumination. First hear, then reason and find out all that reason can give about Atman, the self; let the flood of reason flow over it, then take what remains. If nothing remains, thank God you have escaped a superstition.
