  Meditation What Really Is Meditation?

Meditation - What Really Is Meditation? by Radhakrishnan Gurudas

What is the first image that pops into your mind when you think of the word meditation? A room with lighted candles and incense, sitting down cross legged on the floor, palms up, and eyes closed? Well you're pretty close to what most people imagine meditation to be.

Ok so most of it is not entirely untrue of meditation, but it is not necessary the same always. Before we conjure up images of how meditation is practiced let us first understand what meditation really is and why it is widely practiced the world over.

Meditation is a conscious relaxation. It is a process through which the mind reaches a state of serenity or bliss through deep concentration. If water can be used to as an example then meditation can be explained this way; if you start pouring water from a pitcher into a glass, the first few drops would be considered "concentration", and once a steady flow is obtained that would be "meditation". The first few unsteady drops and the small splash they make are considered the distractions in concentration. A deeper state, which is the steady flow in the example, characterizes meditation where the mind is free of distractions.

Stress is the number one reason why most people resort to meditation. Busy schedules, living life in the fast lane, demanding careers and higher expectations have led to soaring stress levels. Some have found solace in prescription drugs that have a "calming" effect to get rid of stress. However most of these forms of relaxation only provide fleeting relief and result in harmful side effects in the long run. After the medications wear off, it is back to the pit again. Since it is an affliction of the mind, the only cure lies in the mind itself.

So how does one go about practicing meditation? It is simpler than what most people think it to be. First up you need to find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, relax your emotions and find an object or thought to meditate on. It is important to just think of a single object or thought and concentrate on it. It is natural if you find that your mind keeps wandering in the beginning, but you need to force your mind to discard all other thoughts that break your concentration. You can still be aware of your surroundings, but you will find as your concentration deepens your surroundings will cease to exist.

Think of meditation as a kind of spring cleaning for your mind and body, except you can do this everyday. People who have been through this will tell you that meditation brings about a feeling of utter bliss where the mind is free and relaxed. Oh and if your wondering about the side effects of meditation; let's see, how about peace, tranquility and a feeling of completeness? Works for me, time you tried some of the goodies for yourself!
