  The Effects Of Sin

The Effects of Sin by JeNeika Smith

Over the past week or so, my mind has returned to a familiar topic...recognizing the effects of sin in one's life. When we are in the midst of the sin, we really cannot SEE the far reaching consequences of our actions, or the way they will shape our lives-and in most instances, we don't care. But rest assured, every sin HAS an effect on our lives in some way. Let's take a look at some examples from the Bible showing this concept.

The first account I will present is, of course, the ORIGINAL sin, from whence sin was introduced into humanity. Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, committed humanity's first sin when they both disobeyed God (thereby establishing the definition of sin-disobedience to the known will of God) by eating of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge (Genesis 3). Now, at the time, they were told by the serpent and believed that they could eat of it, without any consequence other than becoming like God. Unfortunately, they were quite wrong, as indeed they were found out and then banished from the Garden of Eden, to live lives of toil and hard work. That was the immediate effect. However, they certainly did not, could not have known that by their simple action, they introduced rebellion into humanity, which then affected ALL who came after them.

The second account is from the life of one of the most popular figures in the Old Testament, King David of Israel. King David was known and widely revered for being a mighty warrior, a man of intelligence with exceptional musical ability, and most notably, a man who who loved God and strived to follow His direction and will. However, David was not above falling into temptation and sin. The most striking example of this is when David had an affair Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, one of his soldiers . David was enraptured with her beauty and decided he had to have her-so he sent for her and had sex with her. She later sent word to him that she was pregnant-and since her husband had been off fighting for quite a while, the King knew the child was his (2 Samuel 11:2-5). In order to cover his sin, he conspired to have her husband Uriah come home for a leave, thinking the man would sleep with his wife. However, Uriah, being a devoted servant to David, would not allow himself the luxury or pleasure, when his comrades were still on the battlelines. When David saw that Uriah would not budge, he then arranged to have him sent back to the camp, and ordered he be placed on the front line in the next battle, where he would surely be (and was) killed. After such, he married Bathsheba and moved her into his palace. When he was confronted by a prophet who told him God would punish him publicly for his sin, David immediately repented and was forgiven. However, his sin DID still have a consequence-the child died after birth. Additionally, his sins were revisited in incidents that occurred to his other children later on. In his initial lust for the woman, David did not stop to think about any potential consequence-as many of us do not.

In both of these instances, the parties involved did not think about exactly what COULD happen if they did the deed-at the moment when they were presented with the temptation, their immediate thought was to satisfy their want, despite knowing it was forbidden. And that, certainly, is a condition we all are familiar with. But God, in His grace and mercy, provided us a way to be forgiven of our sins-and the best thing is, all we have to do is BELIEVE, CONFESS, and REPENT! Thank goodness for that solution-the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ...for without it, the entire world would be hopelessly and utterly lost.

My question for you-is there any sin for which you have not repented in your life right now? Have you not yet declared Christ as your Savior and Redeemer-but recognize the need for forgiveness and a relationship with Him? If so, I encourage you to pray a simple prayer such as this:

"Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me to avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."
